Qingdao Oriental OMC

Location: Qingdao, China

The 300-meter long (total area: 30,000 m2) Qingdao Pier creates a connection between land and ocean serving as an “ocean bridge” and year-round entertainment and leisure destination. The linear waterfront is emphasized by an iconic structure designed as a “shed” sheltering inside internal buildings and garden terraces . The roof structure skin is covered with photovoltaic cells and solar panels that will provide electricity to run the building and to create a zero carbon footprint project. The overall design approach focuses on creating a highly flexible internal space that can be adapted to future market trends with possibility of housing a various fashion, technology and entertainment venues. Visitors will be able to enjoy a year-round central galleria interior bar and shopping street as well as outdoor pedestrian promenades running along both sides of the pier. The huge winter garden will serve as a fashion and planned program venue. The ocean bridge culminates in circular form of a hotel and performing square with spectacular ocean views. Terraced hotel rooms are clustered around an interior arcade that can be opened to the outside during good weather.
